The Million Dollar Mattress Question: A Chiropractor’s Perspective

“What’s the best mattress for me?”

As a chiropractor, I hear this question constantly, and let me be upfront: there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

It’s the million-dollar question, and even with all the expertise in the world, I can’t tell you which mattress will transform your sleep. What I can tell you is that this question has kept me listening. Anecdotally, I poll my patients when they rave about their mattresses. Brand names like Tempur-Pedic, Saatva, Sleep Number, and Purple often come up. For every patient who loves these brands, though, I can find another who absolutely hates them.

This is why I focus less on the mattress itself and more on how you sleep on it.

The Key to Sleep Health: Position Over Product

No matter how expensive or well-reviewed your mattress is, if you’re sleeping in a misaligned position, you’re setting yourself up for discomfort. A misaligned sleeping posture can leave you waking up stiff, sore, and cranky—and, just like driving a car out of alignment, your body continues to compensate throughout the day.

So, what’s an aligned position?

  • On Your Back:This is an excellent option for spinal alignment.
  • On Your Side:Also great, but it requires some attention to detail.

Side Sleeping: The Right Way

Most of my patients say they sleep on their sides, but when I dig deeper, their “side sleeping” often involves a twisted posture:

  • The top knee is thrown forward.
  • The bottom leg is straight while the top leg bends.

Would you sit or stand like that all day and expect your spine to feel good? Probably not. This twisted position can contribute to pelvic misalignment, low back pain, and even neck and hip discomfort.

Pro tip: Place something soft and supportive between your knees. I personally love cube pillow, but any small pillow works. Some patients swear by body pillows or pregnancy pillows. I prefer something small so I can easily flip from side to side.

Stomach Sleeping: Why It’s Time to Break the Habit

Sleeping on your stomach is the most misaligned position and is often linked to neck pain, headaches, upper back tightness, and low back strain. But it’s a hard habit to break because of the sense of security it provides.

Hugging a body pillow can help trick your brain into feeling safe—like an animal protecting its vulnerable belly. Over time, this can help you transition to a healthier position.

Your Mattress Isn’t the Only Factor

If you’re waking up with pain, the 6–8 hours of sleep you just had are a big piece of the puzzle. Let’s also consider:

  • Position:Are you twisting or sleeping without support?
  • Environment:Falling asleep on the couch isn’t doing you any favors.
  • Jaw Tension:Grinding or clenching your teeth can wreak havoc on your neck and upper back.

If your pain starts later in the day, we need to explore daytime habits like your work posture, workout routine, commute, or even activities like walking a dog or lifting kids.

The Role of Chiropractic Adjustments

If you’ve tried everything—adjusting your position, using pillows, or even buying a new mattress—and you’re still waking up in pain, it could be because your spine is stuck in a misaligned position.

The best time to reset your sleeping habits is immediately after a chiropractic adjustment. Your spine is finally in alignment, giving you a fresh start to practice proper sleep posture.

Before You Run Out and Buy Another Mattress…

If you’re ready to ditch last year’s mattress because you’re still waking up sore, let’s talk first. A combination of chiropractic adjustments and intentional sleeping habits can save you time, frustration, and money.

Even cutting down your time in a twisted position by one hour per night adds up—seven hours less per week is a big win for your spine. You’ll hold your adjustments longer, wake up feeling better, and start each day on a stronger, healthier note.

Let’s work together to focus on what’s within your control. The mattress? That’s just the foundation. It’s what you do on it that truly matters.
