Beyond the Symptoms: Why Chiropractic Is More Than Just Pain Relief

One of my long-time patients is a hairdresser. They stand all day, working with their arms raised—a physically demanding job. They’ve been coming in once a month for years to stay tuned up. One day, a client told them, “If you just did Pilates, you wouldn’t have to go to the chiropractor.” Without missing a beat, my patient responded, “If you just went to the chiropractor, you wouldn’t have to go to Pilates three times a week.”
I love that exchange because it highlights something I hear all the time: the idea that there’s only one right way to take care of your body. But the reality is, health isn’t one-size-fits-all. The key is finding what works for you.
Most people start chiropractic care because they’re in pain. That’s normal—pain is usually the last thing to show up when something is wrong and the first thing to go away when you start addressing it. But stopping care as soon as the pain disappears is like quitting a workout routine as soon as you feel stronger. You’re only scratching the surface of the real issue.
Think of chiropractic in three phases:
  1. Acute Care – When you’re in pain, adjustments focus on relief.
  2. Corrective Care – Once the pain subsides, we work on realigning your body so it holds that balance longer.
  3. Maintenance Care – Like any healthy habit, ongoing care helps prevent future issues before they start.
And maintenance isn’t just about chiropractic—it applies to everything that keeps you functioning well. Flossing, drinking water, taking vitamins, eating vegetables, exercising… These things can feel routine or even unnecessary at times. But skip them for a while, and your body will remind you why they matter.
I sometimes hear, “I was hesitant to start chiropractic because I don’t want to have to go forever.” But no one says that about exercise. Imagine saying, “I don’t want to start working out because then I’ll have to do it for life.” Of course, you don’t have to do anything. But if you want to keep feeling good, taking care of your body has to be a lifelong commitment. Chiropractic is just one piece of that puzzle.
So the question isn’t, “Do I have to keep going?” It’s, “Do I want to keep feeling my best?”
Your health isn’t one-size-fits-all—what works for one person might not work for another. The key is finding what keeps you feeling your best. Whether it’s chiropractic, Pilates, or a combination of both, the goal is the same: to move well, feel great, and stay ahead of problems before they start.
If you’re ready to go beyond just treating symptoms and build a plan for long-term wellness, I’d love talk about a tailored plan just for you. Schedule your next appointment and keep your body working for you, not against you.
