Do Chiropractors Always Take X-Rays? Here’s What You Need to Know

A post in my neighborhood Facebook group said, “Looking for a new chiropractor. Tired of not knowing what I pay beforehand and the countless x-rays before adjustment.”

Ouch. But honestly, I can’t blame them.

X-Ray

Do chiropractors take X-rays of every patient before an adjustment? The short answer is no, not always. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every patient is unique; X-rays are only one tool in the larger diagnostic picture. Let’s break this down.

When Are X-Rays Necessary?

I take X-rays when I feel they’re necessary based on a patient’s history and current condition. For instance, if you’ve experienced:

  • A car accident at any point in your life.
  • Years of high-impact sports such as gymnastics, hockey, football, or running, and yes, even if this was in high school 20 years ago.
  • A desk job that’s contributed to posture issues.
  • Pain that started in one area (like your lower back) and now radiates to another (like your leg).
  • Persistent issues you *think* are unrelated to chiropractic such as digestive issues (may indicate underlying inflammation), or headaches (may indicate prior whiplash, or changes from poor posture or grinding your teeth, for example).

I am a detective when it comes to your health and these factors, along with others, guide my decision to use X-rays—not as a routine step, but as a personalized diagnostic tool.

When I Might Choose Not to Take X-Rays

If a patient is pregnant or prefers not to have X-rays, I respect their decision. In these cases, I rely on a thorough consultation and intake process to determine whether it’s appropriate to move forward with care. However, there are instances when I feel X-rays are critical—such as for patients with a history of cancer or surgeries involving the neck or back.

How X-Rays Work in My Office

If X-rays are warranted, the process is quick and efficient. I have a digital X-ray machine in my office, which means we can capture images and review them together immediately. I often show patients sample X-rays alongside their own, helping them understand what we’re seeing and how it relates to their condition.

What About Costs?

I believe in transparency when it comes to pricing. If you’re uninsured, I’ll review the cost with you beforehand to ensure there are no surprises. For patients with insurance, I explain what they’ll owe for X-rays and verify their policy before discussing everything at your second visit.

A Thoughtful Approach to Care

Taking X-rays isn’t about following a rigid protocol—it’s about tailoring care to each patient. Whether we use X-rays or not, my goal is always to provide safe, effective, and personalized chiropractic care.
